According to the officials, Ghosalkar was shot dead by a lone assailant, whom the police identified as Mauris Noronha, in the Dahisar area. Later, the assailant, Noronha, too, shot himself dead, according to the police.
Speaking to ANI, DCP (Crime Branch) Raj Tilak Roushan said, "There was an incident of firing in the jurisdiction of MHB police station in which two persons died. Further investigation by the Crime Branch is underway. We are also in the process of registering an FIR in the matter. We will also probe if the assailant had a valid licence for the firearm (used for the crime). The matter is being probed from all angles."
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Anand Dubey has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.
"An atmosphere of 'Jungle Raj' is being created in the state. Firings are taking place in broad daylight. A thorough investigation should be made into the incident," Dubey said.
It is worth to be noted that this is second instance of this kind since January. The opposition leaders reacted sharply when BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad allegedly opened fire on Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) faction leader Mahesh Gaikwad at the Hill Line Police Station in Ulhasnagar earlier. The BJP MLA is being held in prison by the courts.
Meanwhile, the leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT) questioned the incident and held the state government accountable. As to State Congress chief Nana Patole, the tragedy initiates the 'Jungle Raj' in the state.
"There is no rule of law in Maharashtra. Law and order have utterly collapsed in the state. Consistent firing by the MLAs of the ruling party marks the beginning of 'Jungle Raj'", Patole said while speaking to ANI.
Taking it to his X handle, Nana Patole tweeted, “The recent incidents of open firing in Maharashtra is a very serious matter, the death of former corporator Abhishek Ghosalkar, son of Vinod Ghosalkar, in an attack is shocking. The manner in which he was killed is horrific. Is there law and order in the state? This question is getting bigger. The decline of Maharashtra from all sides is sad. One wonders whether the Home Minister sitting on the 'Sagar' bungalow is paying attention to the law and order system of Maharashtra or not.”
