'Cash-for-Query' controversy: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha today after the Ethics Committee's report on the 'cash-for-query' scandal. The decision led to a heated discussion and a subsequent walkout by the opposition.
Union Parliamentary Pralhad Joshi moved the motion for expulsion. Speaker Om Birla stated, "This House accepts the conclusions of the Committee that MP Mahua Moitra's conduct was immoral and indecent as an MP. So, it is not appropriate for her to continue as an MP."
Moitra, who was denied an opportunity to speak in the House, read out her statement outside. Opposition members staged a walkout in protest, and the House was adjourned until December 11.
The Ethics Committee's report recommended Moitra's expulsion, describing her conduct as "highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal." The report also called for a time-bound, legal inquiry by the central government.
Opposition MPs questioned the fairness of the investigation, with TMC's Nusrat Jahan raising concerns. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticised the adoption of the report, labelling it a 'disgrace' and alleging political vendetta by the BJP.
During the debate, Congress MP Manish Tewari questioned whether the Ethics Committee's procedure overrides the fundamental principle of Natural Justice. He argued against the Committee deciding the exact punishment, emphasizing the House's role.
Tewari demanded more time for members to review the report, citing its voluminous nature. He urged adherence to the principle of Natural Justice, advocating a fair chance for Moitra to present her case.
The opposition, including members of the Congress, deemed the report a "fixed match" and contended that BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's complaint lacked evidence.
The expulsion of Mahua Moitra, a prominent TMC leader, adds a new chapter to the ongoing controversy, with opposition leaders expressing concerns about the fairness of the process and the impact on parliamentary principles.
