Resistance front

National News: After the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, The Resident Front (TRF) is once again in the spotlight. The terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that such incidents will continue to happen in the valley. Let's take a closer look at what TRF is and its growing influence.

Formation and Role of TRF

In 2019, after the abrogation of Article 370, new challenges arose for terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorists from across the border could no longer infiltrate India easily. Taking advantage of this, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Indian Mujahideen formed The Resident Front (TRF), an organization focused on spreading terrorism and carrying out Pakistan's agendas in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan’s Intelligence Agency’s Involvement

Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, played a key role in the establishment of TRF. A report by Oraaf Magazine in 2021 revealed that ISI officials were instrumental in naming and directing the organization. Interestingly, TRF is the first terrorist group to have an English name. Typically, terrorist groups use Urdu or Persian words, but this time, Pakistan's intelligence officials chose an English name to avoid international scrutiny.

How TRF Operates

All terrorists in TRF are from Jammu and Kashmir. These terrorists are initially trained in Pakistan and then returned to their homes in Kashmir. When given the orders to attack, they leave their homes, execute the attack, and then hide in remote areas. The organization doesn’t have a single leader but operates under a commander system where commanders work zonally, receiving directions from Pakistan.

Funding Situation of TRF

In 2022, the Indian government imposed severe restrictions on the funding of terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, affecting TRF as well. In 2023-2024, TRF commanders reportedly started selling their ancestral properties to fund the terrorists. Despite the financial setbacks, the organization continues its operations. The terrorists affiliated with TRF are paid on a monthly basis, while its informants are compensated according to the tasks they perform.

TRF’s Strategy for Attacks

TRF terrorists typically target Hindus, tourists, and high-ranking officers. Experts believe that this strategy is aimed at gaining fame quickly and further promoting terrorism. TRF aims to spread terror in the region by carrying out such attacks.

The activities of TRF present a significant threat to Jammu and Kashmir, and its growing influence could potentially destabilize the region further.
