Tragic! 9 dead, 17 injured as under-construction building collapses in Kolkata

The building has been under construction since December 2022. It comprised 16 apartments, each of 500 square feet area, all of which were booked for sale.

A five-storey under-construction building  collapsed in Kolkata's Garden Reach area on Sunday night leaving ten people dead. 
Bengal government minister Sujit Bose arrived to inspect the incident site. He said that nine people died after being buried under the debris. However, 17 people have been evacuated safely. At the same time, some other people are still trapped under the debris.

CM Mamata Banerjee visits site

Amidst this incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the spot. Despite having a bandage on his head, the CM visited the incident site along with top officials and took information on it. He assured the local residents of taking strict action against illegal construction. He said the government would compensate the families of each deceased and injured person. She also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to families of the victims and Rs 1 lakh each to the injured. 

“This is an illegal construction,” she said after meeting the injured at a hospital. I express my condolences to the families of the victims. I would request the administration to take strict action against those involved in illegal construction.”

Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also visited the accident site and spoke to the locals, rescue workers and police personnel posted there. Later, he visited the hospital and met the injured.
