Punjab News: Rescue operations are currently underway following the collapse of a multistorey building in Sohana village, located in Punjab's Mohali district. Local authorities have reported that several individuals are feared trapped under the rubble, prompting immediate action from district officials.
Upon learning of the incident, district authorities swiftly launched a rescue operation. Two excavators have been deployed to assist in clearing the debris, while a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also arrived at the scene to aid in the search and rescue efforts. The local fire brigade is actively participating in the operation as well.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, "Sad news has been received that a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) has collapsed. The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot." He emphasized his commitment to staying in touch with local administration throughout the rescue efforts and urged the public to cooperate with officials. "We pray that there is no loss of life; we will also take action against the culprits," he added.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Mohali) Deepak Pareek confirmed that rescue operations are progressing, although it remains unclear if anyone is trapped inside. "Our teams are working diligently. Efforts are on to clear the debris as soon as possible," he stated, noting that lighting arrangements have been made to facilitate nighttime operations.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise at the moment of collapse, indicating a sudden failure of the building structure. Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse may have been triggered by excavation work conducted for a basement in a nearby area. This raises concerns about construction practices and safety regulations in the region.
Local politicians, including Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, visited the site to assess the situation firsthand. Singh remarked on the unfortunate nature of the incident and reiterated that rescue operations are being conducted vigorously.
As rescue teams continue their efforts, there is an urgent need for thorough investigations into the building's structural integrity and compliance with safety standards. The community is left anxiously awaiting updates on those potentially trapped beneath the rubble.
