The monsoon has gripped Maharashtra, severely affecting Mumbai and other regions. Mumbai is experiencing significant flooding after heavy rains, resulting in the closure of schools, colleges, and offices. Amidst the chaos, a harrowing video has surfaced from Raigad, revealing the dangers faced by tourists at the historic Raigad Fort.

On Sunday, the area around Raigad Fort experienced intense rainfall, reminiscent of a cloudburst. This sudden downpour transformed the fort's steps into cascading waterfalls, trapping visitors. The steps of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's fort quickly became perilous. Fortunately, iron chains installed along the steps provided some measure of safety, allowing tourists to hold on and stabilise themselves. Many visitors struggled against the strong currents, but timely assistance from fellow tourists prevented any serious injuries.

The Historical Significance of Raigad Fort

Located south of Mumbai, Raigad Fort, standing at 1350 meters above sea level, is an important historical site. Visitors must climb 1450 steps to reach the summit. The fort holds great significance as the coronation site of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and served as the capital of the Maratha Empire. Shivaji Maharaj passed away at this fort in 1680. Despite the heavy rains, many tourists visited the fort on Sunday afternoon. The sudden downpour around 3 PM resulted in torrents of water flowing down the steps, leading to a precarious situation for the visitors.

Mumbai's Rainfall and Weather Predictions

The meteorological department has forecast heavy rainfall in central Maharashtra until July 11. Mumbai, already grappling with severe waterlogging, has seen major disruptions. Several local train services have been cancelled due to submerged railway tracks, further impacting daily life in the city.

As Maharashtra braces for continued monsoon rains, authorities and residents remain on high alert to manage and mitigate the challenges posed by the heavy downpour.
