Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Satabdi Roy on Wednesday said that the party would like West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the grand opposition alliance.

This statement comes after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, on the conclusion of the two-day opposition meeting that resulted in the alliance being named INDIA, said that the grand old party’s intention is not to gain power or bag top posts.

“I had already told in Chennai on [MK] Stalin’s birthday that Congress is not interested in power or the post of Prime Minister. Our intention in this meeting is not to gain power for ourselves. It is to protect our constitution, democracy, secularism and social justice,” Kharge told other party leaders in the meeting, as per sources.

When reporters asked TMC Lok Sabha member, Satabdi Roy, “Congress is not in the race of Prime Ministerial face”, she replied, “Then we [TMC] would like Mamata Banerjee to be [the Prime Minister].”

‘NDA, can you challenge INDIA?’: TMC leader Mamata Banerjee

Earlier on Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee spoke in a press conference after the opposition meeting in Bengaluru, throwing a challenge to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to challenge the opposition alliance which has been titled INDIA – which was reportedly suggested by the Bengal CM herself.

“It was a constructive and fruitful meeting. I want to ask the NDA, BJP and their allies… can you challenge ‘INDIA’?” Banerjee said in the press conference.
