Amid escalating nationwide protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal TMC minister Udayan Guha has ignited controversy with his recent remarks. Speaking at a public event, Guha issued a stark warning to those criticising Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the incident.
Guha’s comments drew widespread condemnation as he threatened those who were abusing Banerjee on social media and demanding her resignation. “Those pointing fingers at Mamata over the rape and murder incident, abusing her on social media and demanding her resignation, will be identified and their fingers will be broken,” Guha declared. He further compared the ongoing unrest in Kolkata to the recent political turmoil in Bangladesh.
The minister added, “Even after mobs vandalised the hospital, the Kolkata police did not open fire. The police will not allow a Bangladesh-type situation in West Bengal. We will not allow Bengal to turn into Bangladesh.”

The remarks sparked a sharp response from BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, who criticized Guha’s statements as “real fascism.” Poonawalla’s condemnation highlighted the tension and controversy surrounding the incident, with accusations of authoritarianism and suppression of dissent.
In response to the unrest, the Kolkata police have taken several actions, including issuing threat notices to citizens and summoning doctors for questioning. The police also cancelled a football match to prevent potential protests and sacked TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen for his comments related to the incident.
Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh emphasised that the police are cracking down on misinformation spread through social media. Ghosh urged protesters to express their dissent in a “proper manner” and warned against sharing false information or personal details about the victim.
The police have summoned various individuals, including TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, for allegedly spreading rumours and disclosing the identity of the victim. The body of the trainee doctor was discovered on August 9, with a civic volunteer arrested in connection with the case.
