In a shocking incident in Kolkata’s Kasba area, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor, Sushanta Ghosh, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt outside his home. The attack, which took place late Friday night, was captured on CCTV. Ghosh, the councillor of Ward 108 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, was seated in front of his residence when two men arrived on a scooter. One of them attempted to shoot him twice, but the gun failed to discharge.

Quick thinking saves the day

Realising the weapon had malfunctioned, Ghosh immediately sprang into action, charging towards the shooter. The assailants attempted to flee on their scooter but lost control and fell. A dramatic foot chase ensued, with Ghosh and local residents managing to apprehend one of the attackers.

The captured assailant was thrashed by the crowd before being coerced into confessing on camera. In a video shared widely online, the shooter admitted, “I was not given any money. I was just given a photo and asked to murder him.” The suspect was later handed over to the police.

Investigation reveals Bihar connection

Initial police investigations revealed that the attackers were hired from Bihar, likely due to local rivalries. Speaking about the incident, Ghosh said, “I have been a councillor for 12 years and never imagined being attacked, especially in my own neighbourhood."

Local MP Mala Roy and MLA Javed Khan visited Ghosh to express their support following the attack. Authorities are now probing the identities of those behind the assassination attempt and the motive for targeting Ghosh.
