In a scathing attack, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed its verbal artillery at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday, taking issue with the nomination of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha as its candidate from Asansol in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Amit Malviya, the head of BJP's IT cell, lambasted the move in a post on social media platform X, stating, "Meet Shatrughan Sinha, TMC’s candidate from Asansol. TMC rank is full of rapists, both in real (likes of Shahjahan Sheikh) and reel life," and accompanied his criticism with an old clip from Sinha's film.

Expressing his surprise, Malviya questioned Mamata Banerjee's decision, saying, “Surprised Mamata Banerjee didn’t ask Shatrughan Sinha to join her on the eve of International Women’s Day for the sham women empowerment march.” BJP state secretary Priyanka Tibrewal joined the chorus of criticism, drawing parallels between what she termed as "real and reel-life heroes" of the TMC.

Tibrewal remarked, “Look at the similarity between the real and reel life heroes of Trinamool. According to Trinamool, real-life heroes are people like Shahjahan- who raped women in Sandeshkhali, and no wonder their reel-life heroes are people like Shatrughan Sinha who rapes women in the movies.” She didn't mince her words in criticizing the overall list of TMC candidates, pointing out that many of them are tainted with pending cases. Tibrewal expressed concern about the inclusion of individuals like Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the parliament, stating, “No wonder we'll see similar results in the upcoming years.”

In a surprising turn of events earlier this month, Bhojpuri actor-singer Pawan Singh withdrew his candidacy as the BJP nominee for the Asansol seat in the Lok Sabha polls. Singh, in a post on X, expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership for the nomination but cited unspecified reasons for his withdrawal. The TMC had previously criticized Singh's candidature, alleging that his songs were crude and depicted women, including those from the state, in a vulgar manner.

Shatrughan Sinha, in response to the developments, characterized the situation as an internal affair of the BJP.
