New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was released from Tihar Jail on Friday after spending 156 days behind bars in connection with the liquor policy scam case. The Supreme Court granted him bail, leading to a large gathering of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and supporters outside the jail to welcome the leader back.

Kejriwal's defiant stand after jail release

Upon his release, Kejriwal struck a defiant tone, declaring, "My strength and resolve have only grown stronger. I will continue to serve the country, and nothing can weaken my spirit." He further stated that his imprisonment had not dampened his will, adding, "I will keep fighting against anti-national elements for the rest of my life."

The Supreme Court’s decision came from a bench led by Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan. Kejriwal was granted bail on a bond of Rs 10 lakh, along with two sureties.

Conditions imposed by Supreme Court

While Kejriwal was granted bail, the Supreme Court imposed several restrictions. He has been directed not to comment on the case's merits publicly, and the conditions set in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case will also apply here. Kejriwal is barred from visiting his office, the Delhi Secretariat, or signing official files unless required to seek the Lieutenant Governor's approval.

Support from family and party leaders

Kejriwal's wife, Sunita Kejriwal, expressed her joy over the bail decision. In an X (formerly Twitter) post, she congratulated the AAP family for standing strong and wished for the quick release of other party leaders. "Congratulations to the AAP family! Kudos for staying strong. Wishing also the soonest release of our other leaders,” she wrote.

Former Deputy Chief Minister and AAP leader Manish Sisodia also welcomed Kejriwal’s release. He called it a victory for the Constitution, saying, "No matter who tries to act like a dictator, the Constitution of our country stands as a shield." Sisodia emphasized that the Supreme Court’s ruling affirms that no one is above the law.

Liquor policy scam

The case surrounding Kejriwal’s imprisonment revolves around the controversial Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. Both the CBI and ED allege that the policy was manipulated to benefit certain liquor license holders, leading to accusations of corruption. The policy, which has since been withdrawn, continues to be the subject of an extensive investigation.
