Viral Video: In a dramatic incident that unfolded in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh, a clash erupted between local police and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers over an effigy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The altercation occurred during a protest against Gandhi's recent remarks regarding reservation policies during his visit to the United States.

Protest sparks controversy

BJP workers organized a march aimed at condemning Rahul Gandhi's statements made during an interaction with students at Georgetown University. In his speech, Gandhi suggested that the Congress party would reconsider reservation policies only when "India is a fair place," a comment that ignited backlash from various quarters. As part of their demonstration, BJP members attempted to burn an effigy of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, but their efforts were thwarted by local law enforcement.

Footage from the scene captured the chaotic struggle as police officers snatched pieces of the effigy while BJP workers pursued them, intensifying the tension in the air. The police were quick to act in a bid to prevent the protest from escalating further.

Criticism and backlash

BJP MP Bhola Singh strongly condemned Gandhi's statements, stating, “Rahul Gandhi ji is a very senior leader of the Congress. He has given such a statement after going to America... It is a very condemnable statement.” He further emphasized that the protest was supported by members of the Scheduled Castes and urged Gandhi to apologize to the nation, especially to those from SC, ST, and OBC communities.

In response to the backlash, Rahul Gandhi clarified his position, asserting, “Yesterday someone misrepresented my statement that I am against reservation. But let me make it clear - I am not against reservation. We will take reservations beyond the limit of 50 percent.”

Political fallout

Union Home Minister Amit Shah joined the fray, critiquing Gandhi's remarks and stating, “Whenever he wants to say anything ‘rubbish,’ he says that in America.” Shah further accused Gandhi of attempting to mislead the public regarding the BJP's stance on reservations, asserting that as long as there is at least one BJP MP in Parliament, the reservation for Dalits and backward communities will remain intact.
