New Delhi: Communal violence broke out in Jainoor Mandal of Asifabad district, Telangana, on Wednesday, after a mob of around 2,000 people began attacking properties owned by the Muslim community. The unrest was sparked by the alleged sexual assault of a tribal woman by an auto-rickshaw driver who incidently belomged to the Muslim community.

Videos circulating on social media show the mob freely vandalizing shops in the market, with no police offcials nowhere to be found in the affected areas. According to reports, the sexual assault incident, which took place last week, triggered widespread anger, leading to a bandh call on Wednesday. As tensions escalated, the large mob descended upon the village, targeting the Muslim-owned properties in Jainoor.

Protest led by local right-wing organizations

The violence is believed to have been fueled by the support of local right-wing organization leaders, who backed the protest. Despite being informed, the local police were initially unable to contain the situation due to the sheer size of the crowd. However, reinforcements were dispatched from neighboring mandals and headquarters to assist the overwhelmed local forces. Senior police officials are en route to the area to oversee the security arrangements and restore order.

In response to the rising violence, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi called for calm and urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
