On Saturday, Assam police apprehended a man from Dhemaji district on charges related to dowry, following the alleged suicide of his 19-year-old wife. The suspect, Ramesh Gogoi, was arrested after a case was registered under Section 304-B (dowry death) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The deceased, Tolari Koch Gogoi, married Ramesh a few years ago. Police sources revealed that Tolari's family had previously lodged a complaint against Ramesh. The complaint detailed that Ramesh had eloped with Tolari and forcibly married her when she was just 15 years old.
Authorities are also investigating whether Ramesh is involved in practising child marriage. An investigating officer stated, "As of now, we have found him being accused of promoting dowry and abetment of suicide. However, an investigation is going on, and if required, we’ll include child marriage sections to the case."
Tolari's mother accused Ramesh of subjecting her daughter to both physical and mental torture while demanding money. She stated, "She was depressed and was in fear. That anxiety forced her to finish life."
The police discovered Tolari's body at Ramesh’s residence on Friday, but he had fled the scene. By Saturday afternoon, authorities managed to apprehend him. Ramesh is scheduled to be presented before the court on Sunday.
The woman's body has been sent for a postmortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
