Five Telangana men have finally reunited their families in a touching reunion, after nearly two decades of misery and separation. This event marks the conclusion of a long and painful journey that started with their detention in Dubai in 2005. Social media users have been sharing a touching video of BRS leader KT Rama Rao and their reunion after nearly eighteen years in prison.
In 2005, a group of people from Telangana's Rajanna Sircilla district—Shivarathri Mallesh, Shivarathri Ravi, Gollem Nampally, Dundugula Laxman, and Shivarathri Hanmanthu—who were employed in Dubai were charged with the murder of a Nepali national who was a watchman in the Gulf. They were found guilty and given a 25-year prison term.
The BRS gave credit to their leader, former Telangana minister KTR, for standing up for them and putting in many hours to secure their release via diplomatic channels. KTR met with the victim's family in Nepal in 2011 and made them an offer of ₹15 lakh in compensation. The five men's legal position was worsened by the language barrier in Dubai, and in spite of their attempts and appeals, the Dubai court sentenced them to a heavy term. Their detention was extended after their first request for amnesty was denied.
