The much-talked-about Waqf Amendment Bill is to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (April 2). The ruling BJP has completed preparations for this and has issued a three-line whip to all its MPs asking them to be present in the House on Wednesday. Meanwhile, there is talk that some of BJP's allies are skeptical about their support to the Waqf Bill. However, amid similar speculations, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the major constituent of the NDA, has made it clear that its MPs will vote in favor of the bill.
Earlier, there was speculation that Chandrababu Naidu's party TDP, which does politics of secularism, is skeptical and will first look into the amendments to the bill that were suggested by him. Sources said three suggestions suggested by the TDP have been incorporated by the JPC in its report and all of them are included in the revised bill. Sources have said that JDU's suggestions have also been included.
JD(U) leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh has said that his party will make its stand clear in Parliament on the JD(U) Waqf Amendment Bill. This has deepened the doubt. However, today senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Lalan Singh and Sanjay Jha brainstormed for a long time on the Waqf Bill.
Reacting to the Congress' demand for clarity on the Waqf Bill, former JD(U) national president Lalan Singh said that Nitish Kumar and JD(U) do not need a Congress certificate on secularism. It is reported that a meeting has been called this evening at JDU office in Patna.
Another constituent of the NDA from Bihar, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), has also announced its support for the bill, but Chirag Paswan's party LJP (R) has not yet said anything openly. Similarly, the stand of NDA constituent and Jayant Chaudhary's party RLD and Ajit Pawar's party NCP, which is in the government in Maharashtra, has not been clear yet.
According to sources, the bill will be introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 2 at 12 noon. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will brief the House on the provisions of the bill. Rijiju said that a consensus has been reached after the committee considered bringing the Waqf Amendment Bill in the meeting and allotting time for discussion on it. The discussion on the Bill will take place for eight hours and the time can be extended if needed. He said that every political party should give its opinion on it because the country wants to hear their opinion. The words of the supporters and opponents of the bill will remain on record.
Who is against the bill?
The bill, which came under intense criticism from the opposition, was introduced by the government after a heated debate in the Lok Sabha in the last session and then the House referred it to the Parliamentary Committee for scrutiny. The Joint Parliamentary Committee, headed by Lok Sabha MP Jagdambika Pal, has already submitted its report to the Lok Sabha Speaker after a detailed discussion. Several opposition parties including the main opposition Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress are opposing it. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi said, "The Waqf Bill is unconstitutional. The Bill violates Articles 14, 25, 26 and 29 of the Constitution.
