In an extraordinary act of compassion, the Mumbai-Nanded Tapovan Express reversed nearly 700 meters on January 4, 2025, to rescue a passenger who had fallen from the train near Manmad Junction. The passenger, identified as 30-year-old Sarvar Shaikh from Uttar Pradesh, suffered severe injuries and tragically passed away later in the hospital.

Details of the incident

According to reports, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. when the emergency chain was pulled, bringing the train to a halt. Divisional Railway Manager Iti Pandey stated that loco pilot MS Alam immediately sought approval from the controller to reverse the train and assist the injured passenger. Guard SS Kadam, informed by other passengers, coordinated with the pilot to execute the rescue.

Goods train halted for rescue operations

In a rare and efficient move, a goods train trailing the Tapovan Express was stopped at a preceding station to facilitate the rescue operation. Shaikh, who had fallen from the third coach, was found by passengers and helped back onto the train.

Passenger succumbed to injuries

The Tapovan Express proceeded to Manmad station, where railway officials arranged an ambulance to rush Shaikh to the nearest hospital. Despite swift action, Shaikh succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The train resumed its journey to Nanded following the incident.

Similar tragedy in Mumbai

Just days earlier, on January 1, a similar incident occurred in Mumbai. Mohan Golap, a 24-year-old Chembur resident, lost his life after falling from a local train near Wadala station. Golap, travelling with a friend, struck a pole near the tracks and sustained fatal head injuries. Despite passengers stopping the train and railway police responding promptly, he was declared dead on the spot.
