Tahawwur Rana, a co-conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, was extradited to India on April 10, 2025, after a long-drawn legal fight in the United States. Rana, who is a Pakistani-Canadian, was surrendered to Indian authorities by US Marshals. Rana's extradition was made possible by the US Department of Justice, with the Indian government making an extradition request in 2020. The US Supreme Court rejected Rana's last appeal, clearing the way for his extradition to India.
Rana is charged with conspiring with David Coleman Headley, the main accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, and handlers of banned terrorist organizations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI). The 2008 attacks killed 166 people and injured more than 238.
US Marshals in the Central District of California on Tuesday transferred custody of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani national and Canadian citizen, to representatives from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Rana for 18 days, where he will be interrogated to uncover the conspiracy of the attacks. The NIA has provided evidence, such as emails shared by Rana, to justify his custody.
Rana will face trial in a special NIA court in Delhi, where he will be tried under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The court has also ordered a thorough medical check-up of Rana prior to his production again.
