Delhi: Tahawwur Rana, prime suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror strike, was extradited from the United States to India. He landed in Delhi on a special aircraft with Indian intelligence and investigation officers, under tight security protocols. Rana's flight arrived at Delhi's Palam airport, where a bulletproof convoy vehicle and armed commandos were present. He will be brought to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters for questioning and subsequently accommodated in Tihar jail.

Trial and Charges

Rana stands accused of criminal conspiracy, war against India, murder, forgery, and offenses under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His trial will take place in a special NIA court in Delhi, with senior criminal lawyer Dayan Krishnan at the helm and Special Public Prosecutor Narendra Mann by his side.

Importance of Extradition

This extradition is a big diplomatic and legal triumph for India, 15 years after the 166 victims were killed. It proves that India has been making attempts to hold the perpetrators accountable and can be the opening up for more extraditions.

Background

Rana, who is a Pakistani of Canadian origin, was detained in the US for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. His extradition came after India made a long-pending request to have him repatriated to stand trial.
