New Delhi: Actress Swara Bhaskar took to social media on Sunday to denounce posts falsely claiming that late CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was a "Christian" hiding behind a Hindu name. Yechury, who passed away on September 12, 2024, after battling a severe lung infection, became the target of rumors circulating online, particularly due to a photo of his embalmed body in a coffin.

Swara Bhaskar's outrage

Reacting strongly to these misleading claims, Swara Bhaskar shared screenshots of posts and wrote, "The flaming idiocy of Sanghi trash will never fail to amaze me!!!" She also countered the rumors by explaining, "I doubt that Comrade Sitaram Yechury converted. His body is in a box because it is embalmed, as it has been donated to AIIMS for medical research! This is publicly available information."

In her response to the controversy surrounding the late Sitaram Yechury, actress Swara Bhaskar strongly denounced the attempts to communalize his death. She expressed her outrage at the way some individuals have tried to exploit Yechury’s passing for sectarian purposes, highlighting what she sees as a troubling trend of politicizing personal tragedies.

Critics labelled as guttersnipes

Swara's critique centers on the idea that certain social media users are using Yechury’s death as an opportunity to advance their own communal agendas. She condemned these actions as not only disrespectful but also as a betrayal of the values that Yechury stood for. By labeling the critics as "guttersnipes".

Her statement, "He was a truly selfless man, committed to humanity’s betterment even after death!" underscores her view that Yechury's life and legacy were marked by a dedication to social justice and communal harmony.

Yechury's complex religious background

One particular post, which Swara highlighted, falsely claimed, "So Sitaram Yechury was a Christian, no wonder he hated Hinduism." Another user even suggested a law forcing Hindus who convert to Christianity to change their names.

Yechury's body had been donated to AIIMS for research, a fact confirmed by the institute. In his farewell speech to the Rajya Sabha, Yechury himself described his complex religious background, emphasizing his identity as an Indian above all.
