In a shocking incident, a suspended Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police fatally shot his son-in-law, an Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer, at the local district court complex on Saturday afternoon. The tragic event unfolded in full public view as the victim attended a mediation session related to a matrimonial dispute with the formers daughter.Harprit Singh, an ICAS officer stationed at the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in New Delhi, was killed by his father-in-law, Malwinder Singh Sidhu. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the mediation centre of the district court complex in Sector 43, Chandigarh. Sidhu, a suspended AIG, fired three shots into Harprits chest at point-blank range, killing him instantly. Dr. Kaur previously practiced at a private hospital in New Delhi before relocating. Their divorce proceedings had been ongoing in the Chandigarh district courts since last year, with this being the third mediation hearing for the case. Both families, residents of neighbouring Mohali, were present at the mediation centre.Details of shootingReports indicate that Sidhu requested to go to the washroom during the mediation session and asked Harprit to show him the way. Another account suggests Harprit had stepped out to use the washroom, followed by Sidhu, who then shot him. Sidhu fired three shots near the washroom, causing Harprits family members and bystanders to rush to the scene after hearing the gunfire. Harprit was immediately transported to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, where he was declared dead on arrival.Arrest and prior chargesMalwinder Singh Sidhu had been arrested in November last year by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on charges of fraud and extortion while serving as AIG in the Human Rights Cell of the Punjab Police, leading to his suspension.
