President Droupadi Murmu becomes the first Indian to receive ‘The Grand Order of the Chain of Yellow Star.’ The award was conferred by the President of the Republic of Suriname, Chandrikapersad Santokhi on Monday.

After receiving the honour, President Murmu said that the honour holds immense significance not only for her but for the people of India too. She dedicated the award to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community.

President Murmu taking it to Twitter said, “I am greatly honoured to receive Suriname’s highest distinction, “Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star.” “This recognition holds tremendous significance, not only for me but also for the 1.4 billion people of India whom I represent. I also dedicate this honour to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between our two countries,” she further added.

Notably, President Murmu landed in Suriname on June 4 while on a state visit to Serbia and Suriname. The president of Suriname, Chandripersad Santokhi, greeted her with full state honours at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, according to an official statement from Rashtrapati Bhawan.

She was greeted warmly by her colleague Santokhi earlier today at the Presidential House in Paramaribo. Apart from this, several pacts were signed between both countries and delegation-level talks were also held.
