The Supreme Court of India sharply criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks against freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, declaring that “no one can mock our freedom fighters.” The rebuke came during a hearing of Gandhi’s plea challenging summons issued by a Uttar Pradesh trial court in a defamation case filed over his alleged derogatory comments during a 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra speech in Akola, Maharashtra. The court, led by Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan, termed Gandhi’s statements “irresponsible,” warning him against making such remarks in the future, or risk suo motu action.

The case stems from a complaint by lawyer Nripendra Pandey, who accused Gandhi of defaming Savarkar by calling him a “British servant” and “pensioner,” claiming the remarks incited hatred. The court emphasized the reverence due to freedom fighters, stating, “They gave us freedom, and you treat them like this.” Gandhi’s counsel argued the proceedings were frivolous, aimed at curbing his role as Leader of Opposition, but the court remained firm, highlighting the need for responsible discourse.

Rahul Gandhi Faces SC Fire

This is not Gandhi’s first legal battle over Savarkar. In January 2025, a Pune court granted him bail in a similar defamation case filed by Savarkar’s grandnephew, Satyaki Savarkar, over a 2023 London speech. The Supreme Court’s stern stance underscores the sensitivity surrounding historical figures like Savarkar, a polarizing Hindutva icon. As political tensions flare, with the BJP accusing Gandhi of disrespecting national heroes, the controversy highlights the delicate balance between free speech and honoring India’s freedom struggle. The next hearing is set for November 18, 2025, as Gandhi navigates multiple defamation cases
