The Supreme Court on Tuesday chose not to intervene in the interim order issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which stayed the election proceedings of the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The two-judge Bench, consisting of Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal, advised the petitioner, the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association, to address their concerns before the high court.

“Why should we entertain this ? You go to the high court…Instead of applying for vacating the interim stay, the petitioner has chosen to approach the Supreme Court. We, therefore, decline to entertain this special leave petition,” the Bench said.

What did Punjab & Haryana HC order in WFI polls case?

The Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association had contested the August 11 order of the Punjab & Haryana High Court. The high court’s order suspended the ongoing elections based on a plea filed by the Haryana Wrestling Association (HWA), which challenged the decision allowing the Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association to cast votes in the WFI polls.

The Punjab & Haryana High Court bench, headed by Justice Vinod S. Bhardwaj, had adjourned the case to August 28. The court observed that the parties “have crucial right to cast vote for the elections to the Executing Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India which is scheduled to be held tomorrow i.e. 12.08.2023 ….. is ordered to be stayed till the next date of hearing.”

In a previous instance in July, the Supreme Court had lifted the Gauhati High Court’s stay on WFI elections.
