Ministry of External Affairs has reported that the two Indian nationals who were recruited by the Russian army have been reported to be killed in the ongoing war conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the sources, the ministry has asked for the mortal remains of the two nationals and has taken up the matter with Russian authorities in Moscow and demanded to release all the Indian nations serving with the Russian army. In addition to this, India has also demanded that there be a verified stop to the recruitment of Indian nationals.

Who were the two Indian nationals?

Two Indian nationals, Hemil Ashwinbhai Mangukiya from Gujarat and Mohammed Asfan from Hyderabad, were killed while serving in the Russian Army during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These individuals were reportedly recruited under pretences, believing they were signing up for support roles, only to find themselves on the front lines.

According to the media reports, Hemil Mangukiya, who joined the Russian military after learning about job opportunities through social media, was working as a security helper and was killed in an airstrike. His family discovered his death through a friend who was with him at the time. Similarly, Mohammed Asfan, who was also misled into joining the Russian forces, was confirmed dead by the Indian Embassy in Moscow earlier this month.

Meanwhile, The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India is actively working to secure the release of other Indian nationals who have been similarly duped and forced to participate in the conflict. The Indian government has emphasized that ensuring the safety and repatriation of these individuals is a top priority, and has engaged in ongoing discussions with Russian authorities to address this issue.

Additionally, investigations by Indian authorities have uncovered a trafficking network that lured these individuals to Russia with promises of lucrative jobs, only to force them into military roles. This network has been targeted by recent raids, leading to the recovery of significant evidence and the detention of suspects involved in the trafficking operation.
