Delhi-NCR was jolted awake early Monday morning as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the region. The tremor, which occurred at 5:36 AM, sent residents rushing out of their homes and sparked immediate reactions from officials and citizens alike.

Early Morning Shivers

The National Center for Seismology reported the earthquake's epicenter was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, with a shallow depth of just 5 kilometers. The Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan has experienced smaller, low-magnitude quakes once every two to three years.

Citizen Reactions

Residents across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad felt the strong tremors, prompting many to evacuate their homes. A woman in Noida Sector 20 described the experience, saying people rushed out in alarm. People waiting outside their homes across Delhi-NCR, fearful of any aftershock4. Ratanlal Sharma, waiting at New Delhi railway station, likened the jolt to a train coming to a screeching halt.

Official Response and Safety Measures

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged calm and adherence to safety precautions. The Delhi Police reassured citizens and provided emergency contact information. AAP leaders Atishi and Arvind Kejriwal expressed concern and prayed for everyone's safety.

Delhi's Seismic Vulnerability

Delhi's location near the Himalayan collision zone makes it prone to frequent shaking from earthquakes. The city is situated in Seismic Zone IV, the second highest in India, highlighting its vulnerability to seismic activity.
