Amid growing concerns over Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India, state governments have intensified health surveillance and preventive measures. So far, five cases have been reported: two in Bengaluru, one in Ahmedabad, and two suspected cases in Nagpur.

Experts stress that HMPV, a respiratory RNA virus, is not new. Dr. Pinaki R. Debnath of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital explained that the virus spreads primarily among individuals with weakened immunity, particularly children and the elderly. Symptoms include nasal congestion, cough, sore throat, and in severe cases, pneumonia-like respiratory distress. "It typically resolves within 2–7 days and does not require antiviral drugs," Dr. Debnath added, emphasizing preventive measures like masking, hand hygiene, and distancing.

Health authorities reassure the public

Dr. Nilam Patel, Additional Director of Public Health in Gujarat, assured that there is no cause for panic. She highlighted that mutations in the virus occasionally lead to localized outbreaks. "A recent case in Gujarat involved a 2-month-old child who was successfully treated and discharged," she stated.

Medical experts, including Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan of the Indian Medical Association, underscored that most children encounter HMPV by age 4. "This is not a severe or new virus like COVID-19. It has been present worldwide for years," he clarified.

Advice for high-risk groups

Dr. Gopi Chand Khilnani of PSRI Institute of Pulmonary Care advised high-risk groups, such as individuals with chronic illnesses, to avoid crowded places and maintain hygiene. He reassured that the current situation is far from the crisis seen during COVID-19’s Delta wave.

State governments step up preparedness

State health ministers from Odisha, Punjab, and Maharashtra echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing readiness to handle potential cases. Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling stated, "No HMPV cases have been reported in the state, and both Central and State Governments are prepared."

Nationwide, health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to remain vigilant but calm.
