In a landmark achievement, Stanford University has named 5,352 Indian scientists among the top 2% of researchers worldwide in its 2024 list, setting a new record. This marks a significant increase from the 4,635 Indian researchers recognized in 2023, underscoring India’s rising influence in global research and innovation.

The 2024 rankings, produced in collaboration with Elsevier, evaluate researchers based on standardized citation metrics, spotlighting the most impactful contributors across a variety of scientific fields. Notably, many Indian scientists have not only maintained their positions but also improved their rankings compared to last year.

Notable Indian Scientists in the 2024 Top 2%

Several Indian researchers have distinguished themselves in this year's rankings:

Sundeep Salvi (KEM Hospital, Pune): Ranked as India’s top respiratory scientist, Sundeep Salvi is globally recognized for his contributions to respiratory science.
Chittaranjan Yajnik (KEM Hospital, Pune): A prominent diabetologist, Yajnik is known for his groundbreaking research on diabetes.
Prodeep Phukan (Gauhati University): Recognized for his significant contributions to the field of chemistry.
Bipan Hazarika (Gauhati University): Celebrated for his work in mathematics.
Ranjit Thakuria (Gauhati University): An associate professor making strides in chemistry.
Krishna Gopal Bhattacharyya (Assam Don Bosco University): A respected figure in chemistry.

Leading Indian Institutions on the List

The surge in Indian representation can be credited to the country’s top institutions fostering a strong research culture. Among the most represented institutions are:

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore: Leading the charge with a significant number of scientists featured in the rankings.
Panjab University (PU): Recorded its highest-ever representation with 46 faculty members.
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU): Contributed 14 researchers to the list.
Symbiosis International University: Added 11 scientists to the rankings.
National Chemical Laboratory (NCL): Featured 12 researchers.
Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA): Contributed 9 scientists.
Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune: Included 4 scientists.
DY Patil Vidyapeeth: Also contributed 4 scientists.
Other notable institutions include the Armed Forces Medical College and College of Engineering Pune, each featuring one scientist in the prestigious list.
