Delhi Winters (X)
New Delhi: As the holiday season unfolds, North Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh are experiencing a harsh cold wave. Despite the chilly conditions, popular tourist destinations like Srinagar and Shimla are missing out on the traditional charm of a 'white Christmas.'
On December 25, 2024, Srinagar recorded a frigid low of minus 7.3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Tabo in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district registered the coldest temperature in the region at minus 10.6 degrees Celsius. The intense cold has led to significant disruptions, with officials reporting the closure of 134 roads in Himachal Pradesh due to recent snowfall in various districts.
The Winter Carnival in Shimla saw a large crowd despite the weather challenges. However, tourists were disappointed as Srinagar has yet to witness any snowfall this season. The absence of snow has dampened hopes for a picturesque holiday experience in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
In Delhi, the maximum temperature reached 22.4 degrees Celsius on Christmas Day, slightly above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature dipped to 8.4 degrees Celsius, which is below normal for this time of year. Similarly, Kashmir is grappling with below-normal temperatures leading to frozen water bodies and disrupted water supply lines.During this period known as 'Chillai-Kalan,' which lasts for 40 days starting December 21, the Kashmir Valley is experiencing extreme winter conditions. Officials have noted that maximum and minimum temperatures are consistently lower than expected for this time of year.
In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall has resulted in substantial road closures, particularly impacting Shimla district where a maximum of 123 roads are closed. The region has also faced power outages affecting 173 transformers due to the severe weather conditions.
Rajasthan is enveloped in dense fog with light rain reported in some areas. In Punjab, temperatures have plummeted with Faridkot recording a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius. Haryana's Narnaul was noted as the coldest area at 5.2 degrees Celsius.
As weather conditions remain unpredictable, the India Meteorological Department forecasts clear skies for Thursday in Uttar Pradesh before more rains are anticipated from December 27 onward. The ongoing cold wave continues to affect daily life across North India as residents brace for further drops in temperature.
