New Delhi: In a bold move to address the recent security lapse in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla has issued an immediate ban on the issuance of visitors' passes for witnessing parliamentary proceedings. The directive, effective until further notice, comes in response to a startling incident where two individuals breached security protocols, entering the House with smoke canisters.

What followed?

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took swift action following the security breach by convening an all-party meeting at 4 pm on the same day. During the meeting, attended by floor leaders of various political parties, the Speaker announced the suspension of passes not only for visitors but also for former MPs and the personal assistants or relatives of current MPs.

Comprehensive security protocol review

In addition to the immediate measures, Speaker Birla has ordered a comprehensive review of the security protocols within the Parliament premises. The gravity of the incident has prompted a high-level probe to investigate the breach thoroughly. Addressing the House, Birla stated, "The incident is a matter of concern, and we are carrying out a high-level inquiry into this incident. The future course of action will be decided as per the findings of the probe."

Seeking input from Parliamentarians

Recognizing the need for a collective approach to security enhancement, Speaker Birla invited all parliamentarians to share their views on necessary security arrangements. The aim is to strengthen security both inside and outside Parliament based on the valuable input from political leaders of all parties.

What did preliminary investigations revealed?

While some MPs sought to discuss the matter when the House reassembled at 2 pm, Speaker Birla deferred the discussion, emphasizing the ongoing internal probe and the involvement of the Delhi Police. Birla clarified that preliminary investigations revealed the discharged smoke was ordinary, intended for sensationalism.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 11 am on Thursday, allowing for a thorough investigation and necessary security adjustments.
