New Delhi: The tragic suicide of a civil services aspirant in Delhi's Old Rajendra Nagar has underscored the extreme pressures faced by students preparing for India's highly competitive examinations. The student, who hailed from Maharashtra, left a poignant note revealing her struggles to cope with the immense pressure. This heart-wrenching incident occurred just days after three other UPSC aspirants died due to flooding in the basement of their coaching center.

Struggles and pressures revealed in a note

In the note made public, the Maharashtra student described the overwhelming mental and emotional strain she experienced. She highlighted the relentless pressure of preparing for the UPSC exams and criticized the exploitative practices of private hostels and PG accommodations. Her note also expressed despair over her repeated inability to clear the UPSC exams. She wrote, "I am sorry, mummy papa. I am really very fed up... there are just problems & issues only, no peace only. I tried every possible way to get rid of this so-called depression, but I can't overcome it."

Voices from friends and family

The student's friend, Shweta, shared with NDTV that she had attempted the exam three times but could not pass. "She gave it her all every time, but the pressure was growing on her. Even the financial burden was building as the rent in the area was increasing every few months," Shweta explained. Anjali's final message was both a plea for understanding and a critique of the systemic issues that plague UPSC aspirants.

Investigation and broader concerns

The Delhi Police have confirmed an investigation into the case. "We are looking into the details of the matter and examining the conditions that led to this tragic incident," a spokesperson said. Her death highlights broader concerns about the pressures faced by students in competitive environments. This incident follows the recent deaths of three students from the same area, who perished in a basement during heavy rains.

Officials have stated that the lack of a drainage system and safety measures, along with the use of the basement for commercial activities in violation of norms, contributed to the deaths of the three civil services aspirants at the coaching center.
