After nearly a decade, a special CBI court in Mumbai has cleared Jiah Khan’s alleged boyfriend, actor Sooraj Pancholi, of all abetment allegations. Sooraj Pancholi was apprehended and charged with the abetment of Jiah’s suicide based on a six-page letter reportedly written by Jiah. However, Pancholi was acquitted due to a lack of evidence after the court directed him to step forward and verify his identity. Jiah’s mother earlier stated that her daughter had been murdered.

The Jiah Khan Case

Jiah, who co-starred in Nishabd with Amitabh Bachchan, was found dead at her Mumbai apartment on June 3, 2013, at the age of 25. Sooraj Pancholi was arrested and booked under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) by Mumbai Police after a note allegedly written by Jiah, exposing her torturous relationship with Sooraj and alleging physical and emotional abuse, was recovered a week later.

Despite his unsuccessful bail petition in a Mumbai court, Sooraj was granted bail on July 1, 2013, after submitting a Rs 50,000 bond. On July 2, the court cleared Sooraj Pancholi of any involvement in Jiah Khan’s suicide. Jiah’s mother, Rabia Khan, was dissatisfied with the ruling and sought an extensive investigation. The case was moved from Mumbai Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) one year after Jiah Khan’s death by the Bombay High Court.

Rabia Khan testified in front of the special CBI court that her daughter, Jiah Khan, was killed by her then-boyfriend, Sooraj Pancholi and that Jiah suffered from depression. Sooraj’s father, actor Aditya Pancholi, filed a defamation suit against Rabia Khan after the case was handed to the CBI.

Rabia filed a new plea with the Bombay High Court last year to revive the nine-year-old case, citing errors in the previous CBI inquiry. However, Rabia’s petition was denied by the Bombay High Court. Rabia alleged in her petition that her daughter had been killed and asked for a new investigation by an independent and specialised body.
