Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to file her nomination for the Rajya Sabha election from Rajasthan on Wednesday. She left her Delhi residence in the morning to travel to Rajasthan.

The election to fill vacant Rajya Sabha seats is scheduled for February 27. Sonia Gandhi has decided to shift to the Upper House after being a Lok Sabha MP for over two decades.

The 75-year-old was Congress president for nearly 22 years between 1998-2022. She won her first Lok Sabha election from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi and Karnataka's Bellary in 1999. In 2004, she retained only the Rae Bareli seat, vacating Amethi for Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders will reportedly accompany Sonia Gandhi when she files her nomination. The last date for filing nominations is February 15.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also a Rajya Sabha member from 1964-67. Sonia Gandhi is the second from the Gandhi family to be nominated.

Her decision to move to the Rajya Sabha is reportedly on health grounds, as frequent travel to constituencies has become difficult. Rajasthan was chosen over Himachal Pradesh as the state from where she will be nominated.

There is speculation that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may now contest the Lok Sabha election from Rae Bareli. But the party leadership has not confirmed any decision on her electoral debut as yet.
