Sonia Gandhi slams Waqf bill as 'attack on constitution'

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has vehemently criticized the Waqf Amendment Bill as an "outright attack on the Constitution". She opines the bill is a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) policy to keep society in a process of ongoing polarization. Gandhi blamed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government for leading the country to a pit where the Constitution will be paper based.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has vehemently criticized the Waqf Amendment Bill as an "outright attack on the Constitution". She opines the bill is a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) policy to keep society in a process of ongoing polarization. Gandhi blamed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government for leading the country to a pit where the Constitution will be paper-based. She also added that their "intention is to destroy" the Constitution. The Congress leader also complained about the government's intentions to turn India into a surveillance state.

Waqf amendment bill: Aims and objectives

The Waqf Amendment Bill intends to make changes in the administration and governance of Waqf properties, which are philanthropic properties donated for religious or social purposes in accordance with Islamic law. The bill intends to rectify issues regarding the effectiveness, accountability, and transparency of Waqf boards and how they function. 

Lok Sabha passes bill despite opposition

The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in the early hours of Thursday, after a long and bitter debate. Opposition bloc 'INDIA' members strongly refuted the bill, while BJP and its allies brushed aside allegations of it being 'anti-Muslim'. Sonia Gandhi also said that the 'One Nation, One Election Bill' is "another subversion of Constitution", and the party strongly opposes this bill.
