New Delhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi ignited a political firestorm on Friday with her remarks regarding President Droupadi Murmu's address to the joint session of Parliament, referring to the President as a “poor thing.” This comment came as President Murmu delivered her speech on the opening day of the Budget Session in New Delhi.
During her interaction with reporters, Gandhi stated, "The President was getting very tired by the end...She could hardly speak, poor thing." This statement quickly drew criticism from various political figures, particularly from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union minister and BJP president JP Nadda condemned Gandhi’s choice of words, labeling them as deeply disrespectful. He emphasized that such comments reflect a broader disregard for the dignity associated with the highest constitutional office in India.
Nadda expressed, “Former Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi’s use of the phrase 'poor thing' to refer to the President is deeply disrespectful and underscores the opposition’s continued disregard for the dignity of the highest constitutional office.” He further criticized the opposition for mocking significant advancements made under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, particularly regarding empowerment initiatives for backward classes and women.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju also weighed in on the controversy, defending President Murmu’s contributions to society. He remarked, “I condemn the comments made by Sonia Gandhi and other opposition leaders. Our President, a tribal woman, is not weak... Droupadi Murmu has worked extensively for the country and society and they cannot even imagine the kind of work she has done... They should apologise to her.”
President Droupadi Murmu's address was significant as it marked the commencement of Parliament's Budget session. In her speech, she highlighted key government achievements and initiatives aimed at fostering self-reliance in India’s defense sector. She stated, “My government is working with the Saturation Approach, so nobody is left in the journey of Vikshit Bharat... We have only one aim to become Viksit Bharat.”
Murmu underscored several accomplishments, including infrastructure developments like the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project and advancements in India's metro rail network, which has now surpassed 1,000 kilometers.
The exchange between Sonia Gandhi and BJP leaders illustrates ongoing tensions within Indian politics, particularly surrounding respect for constitutional offices and leadership roles. As discussions continue, both sides remain firm in their positions regarding empowerment and dignity in governance.
