At a recent Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi launched a strong attack on the Union Government, accusing it of having "no intention whatsoever" to conduct a caste census due since 2021.

While speaking at the parliamentary meeting, she underscored that the failure to conduct the census will not only prevent an accurate estimate of the country’s population but will also deny over 12 crore citizens, especially from scheduled castes and tribes, benefits under the National Food Security Act of 2013- now repackaged as PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.

What are the remarks all about?

The sharp attack from Sonia Gandhi was centered on the government's failure to carry out the census, a task that has been pending since 2021. The census, a vital tool for planning and policy-making, provides detailed information about the population, which is essential for allocating resources and devising effective welfare schemes. The delay has raised concerns about the accuracy of data that influences critical policy decisions.

In her address, Gandhi accused the government of neglecting the democratic and administrative necessity of the census, questioning its commitment to transparency and accountability. She argued that the delay undermines the fundamental rights of citizens to have their voices and needs accurately represented.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that the remarks from Sonia Gandhi come as part of a broader critique by the Congress party of the Modi administration's policies and priorities. The party has accused the government of failing to address key issues such as unemployment, economic growth, and social justice, using the census delay as a focal point for its criticism. While speaking about the Union Budget 2024, she also criticized the Modi government for its handling of economic and social challenges, particularly concerning farmers and youth.

In the last, Sonia Gandhi expressed condolences to families affected by Wayanad landslides and other natural calamities. She along with Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and others observe a moment of silence for the victims of the Wayanad landslide.
