Something fishy? Police finds Delhi connection in NEET paper leak case after Bihar, Maharashtra

Around 24 lakh candidates appeared in the exam on May 5 this year and the results were declared on June 4. Since then, the NTA is facing criticism over the NEET-UG 2024 paper leak and the alleged irregularities after 67 students scored 720 out of 720.

New Delhi: In a significant development, two school teachers from Maharashtra, Sanjay Tukaram Jadhav and Jalil Umarkhan Pathan, have been implicated in the NEET paper leak case, resulting in a First Information Report (FIR) filed in Latur, Maharashtra. Sanjay Tukaram Jadhav and Jalil Umarkhan Pathan, formerly associated with Zilla Parishad schools and proprietors of private coaching centres in Latur, were apprehended by the Nanded Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) yesterday. While Jalil Umarkhan Pathan was taken into custody after extensive questioning, Sanjay Tukaram Jadhav remains at large.

What authorities found? 

Authorities uncovered incriminating evidence on their phones, including admit cards and WhatsApp communications with several students. Both suspects maintained regular contact with an individual in Delhi named Gangadhar, facilitating arrangements for NEET aspirants in exchange for significant financial compensation. The FIR, filed by Maharashtra police, also implicates Gangadhar and Iranna Kongalwar, a coaching institute trainer in Nanded, on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.

CBI takes over NEET paper leak investigation

Following mounting concerns over examination malpractices, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed control of the NEET paper leak investigation on Saturday. The government has pledged stringent measures to combat such irregularities, with potential penalties including up to 10 years' imprisonment and fines up to ₹1 crore for offenders.

Bihar's connection in NEET UG 2024

Earlier revelations by Bihar Police implicated four individuals in the leakage of NEET UG question papers, exposing the operations of 'solver gangs' that distribute leaked papers and provide proxy candidates for examinations. This development underscores ongoing efforts to uphold the integrity of competitive examinations amidst heightened scrutiny and public scrutiny.
