New Delhi: During a Supreme Court hearing on Thursday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sharply rebuked West Bengal government counsel Kapil Sibal for allegedly laughing during discussions about the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. Mehta’s stern remark, “Somebody has lost their life, do not at least laugh,” highlighted the gravity of the case and the sensitivity required during such proceedings.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted its status report to the Supreme Court, revealing critical lapses by the Kolkata Police in handling the case. The report noted that the crime scene was tampered with and that the victim’s family was initially misinformed, being told their daughter had died by suicide.

CJI Chandrachud over the issue

The court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, expressed concern over the delayed registration of the First Information Report (FIR). “The most shocking fact is that the FIR was registered at 11:45 pm, only after the cremation,” Mehta informed the bench. The CBI also pointed out that the postmortem was conducted at 6:10 pm, hours before the police officially recorded the case as an unnatural death.

The Supreme Court described the handling of the case by the Kolkata Police as "extremely disturbing" and ordered the officer responsible for the initial entry to appear in the next hearing. The bench also directed protesting doctors to resume work, assuring them that no adverse action would be taken against them.

The horrific rape and murder have sparked nationwide protests, with doctors demanding swift justice. The victim’s body, found in a seminar hall, bore severe injuries, raising suspicions of a cover-up by authorities. The incident has drawn significant attention, with many questioning the role of the state administration in delivering justice.
