New Delhi: In a tragic development, an Army soldier was martyred in two separate encounters with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam on Saturday. The first encounter occurred in the Modergam area, where the soldier sustained severe injuries and was immediately transported to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Four unidentified terrorists were also neutralised in the operations. Reports claimed that another soldier also succumbed to his injuries late at night.

Ongoing operations seize

The search operations to apprehend the terrorists was active until all the terror suspects were neutralised. Reports indicated that three to four terrorists were hiding in the region who were later killed following a successful encounter operation. Based on intelligence inputs, the Indian Army and local police cordoned off the entire area to locate and neutralise the threats.

Meanwhile, Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the initiation of the encounter through a post on X, stating, “Encounter started at Modergam Village of Kulgam District. Police and Security Forces are on job. Further details shall follow.” A second post detailed another gunfight in the Frisal Chinnigam area, reiterating that contact with terrorists had been established and that security forces were actively engaged.

Surge in terrorist activities in June

June has seen a surge in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army has executed several operations to combat these threats. A significant operation occurred roughly 10 days ago, where three Pakistani terrorists were eliminated in Doda, leading to the recovery of substantial weapons, including two M4 rifles and one AK-47.

Recent terrorist incidents

Additionally, a CRPF jawan was martyred, and two terrorists were neutralised in Kathua.

Amit Shah's review meeting

Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a review meeting in June to address the ongoing terrorism issues in Jammu and Kashmir. He underscored the imperative to eradicate terrorism and take strict action against its supporters. The meeting was attended by prominent officials, including Jammu and Kashmir Governor Manoj Sinha, NSA Ajit Doval, and Army Chief Manoj Pandey.
