A fresh political controversy has emerged after Ruta Awhad, wife of NCP leader Jitendra Ahwad (Sharad Pawar faction), made remarks defending Osama bin Laden, suggesting that society turned him into a terrorist. Her comparison of the late Al-Qaeda leader to India’s former President APJ Abdul Kalam has triggered widespread criticism on social media.

Controversial statement on Osama bin Laden, video surfaces

In a video that has gone viral on social media platforms, Ruta Awhad can be heard stating that society was responsible for turning Osama bin Laden into a terrorist. "Read the biography of Osama bin Laden," she urged. She further added, "Just as APJ Abdul Kalam became Kalam Saheb, Osama became a terrorist. But why did he become a terrorist? He was not born one. Society made him one. He became a terrorist out of frustration."

This statement, equating the journey of Kalam, one of India’s most respected figures, with bin Laden, has provoked outrage among netizens, political opponents, and public figures alike.

Sharp reaction from the BJP

Following the video's circulation, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla strongly criticized the remarks on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He accused NCP’s Sharad Pawar faction and its INDIA bloc allies of consistently defending terrorists.

“NCP Sharad Pawar faction leader Jeetendra Ahwad’s wife defends and eulogises Osama bin Laden. Compares him to APJ Abdul Kalam! Says society made him a terrorist! Jeetendra Ahwad had defended Ishrat Jahan (LeT terrorist). INDI-Congress-NCP Pawar- SP- alliance leaders have routinely defended Yakub, Afzal, SIMI, Kasab and others too,” Poonawalla tweeted, intensifying the backlash.

Political fallout and silence from NCP so far

Despite the uproar, neither Jitendra Ahwad nor any official representative from Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction has responded to the comments. The controversy has brought additional scrutiny to the INDIA bloc, which includes Congress and other opposition parties, as critics highlight past instances where leaders allegedly sympathized with or defended individuals linked to terrorism.

The incident has sparked heated debates, with questions arising over political leaders’ responsibility in making such statements and the potential implications for national security and public sentiment.
