Congress leader Rahul Gandhi started the discussion on the ‘No-Confidence Motion’ brought against the Narendra Modi government in the Lok Sabha today. On the second day of the motion’s debate, Gandhi discussed a variety of issues, including the Manipur violence, as well as his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

“They [the government] have killed Hindustan in Manipur, they have murdered Hindustan in Manipur. One of my mothers is sitting in the House, my other mother was killed in Manipur. By killing people of Manipur, you are killers of Bharat Mata [Mother India]. You [government] are traitors, not patriots,” Gandhi said in the Parliament.

“Manipur has been split in two. Government’s politics has murdered India in Manipur,” he continued.

The Congress leader also criticised the Prime Minister for his lack of action on the ongoing violence. “Our Prime Minister hasn’t visited violence-hit Manipur. For him, Manipur is not a part of India. To listen to the nation’s voice, we will have to give up on arrogance and hatred,” he said.

Comparing the Prime Minister to ‘Ravan’, he said, “Lanka was not set on fire by Lord Hanuman, nor was Ravan killed by Ram; they both perished because of Ravan’s arrogance.”

Rahul Gandhi also touched upon his Bharat Jodo Yatra, saying, “People used to ask me why you started the [Bharat Jodi] Yatra. I was not even aware why I started the Yatra. I realised that I started the Yatra to understand the country. I also wanted to understand why I was abused for 10 years.”

After finishing his speech, Rahul Gandhi left the Parliament to attend his scheduled program in Rajasthan.

Smriti Irani fights back against Rahul Gandhi, says ‘You’re not India’

Union Minister Smriti Irani took offence at Gandhi’s statements, attacking him and the opposition I.N.D.I.A. alliance.

“You are not India because you define corruption in India, you define incompetence in India. You are not India because India is not corrupt. India believes in merit not in dynasty and today of all the days people like you need to remember what was told to the British – Quit India. Corruption Quit India, Dynasty Quit India. Merit now finds place in India…” she said.

She continued, “No one has ever spoken about Mother India’s death, or thump the table at the mention of Mother India’s death. Manipur is a part of India. It was never divided and it will never be divided ever.

She then touched upon the subject of Kashmiri Pandits, saying, “You never felt the pain of Kashmiri Pandits. If Rahul Gandhi has guts then he should respond how Gandhi family dared to divide Kashmir.”

Irani also said that the history of the Congress party is ‘smeared in blood’, referring to the Emergency period.

She mocked Rahul Gandhi for leaving the Parliament after concluding his speech, saying, “Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh repeatedly said that the government is ready to debate on the Manipur issue. The opposition ran away from it, we did not.”
