A 23-year-old student has been apprehended by the Kolkata Police for inciting violence against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The arrest of Kirti Sharma, a second-year B.Com student, occurred on Sunday following provocative social media posts.

Sharma, who operates under the handle 'kirtisocial' on Instagram, posted a disturbing message: "Shoot Mamata Banerjee like Indira Gandhi. If you can't do it, I wouldn't disappoint." This statement has raised significant alarm. In addition to these threats, Sharma is also accused of disclosing sensitive information about the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The police report indicates that Sharma’s Instagram stories included offensive remarks and life threats against the Chief Minister.

The Kolkata Police released a statement detailing the gravity of the situation: "A complaint was received regarding the Instagram user 'kirtisocial,' who posted three stories related to the RG Kar Hospital incident. These posts disclosed the victim’s identity and image, which is highly offensive. Additionally, the accused shared two stories with provocative comments and threats against the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. Such comments could incite social unrest and foster communal hatred."

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh criticised the approach to handling such cases, stating on X, "The police are only responding when protestors post. If you wish to protest, do so respectfully and logically. Spreading false information, making distorted claims, or posting provocative content about the deceased will be met with police warnings."

In a related development, on August 16, West Bengal police arrested 23-year-old Sagnik Laha, a polytechnic student, for disparaging remarks about Mamata Banerjee in the context of the same tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
