New Delhi: Breast cancer is a battle, not a source of fear. Timely testing and the unwavering support of loved ones are crucial in this fight. Women should never feel alone in their struggle against breast cancer; early detection and improved treatments make victory possible. These messages resounded during an event titled 'Breast Cancer in Young Women: Challenge and Hope,' held at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi.

The auditorium at Apollo Hospital witnessed a gathering of senior cancer experts, prominent media figures, social activists, legal professionals, women's rights advocates, educators, researchers, and students who delved into various facets of this disease over the course of three hours. The event also featured breast cancer survivors who bravely shared their personal stories of resilience.

Shamsher Singh, the Editor-in-Chief of India Daily, emphasized the significance of health as the greatest gift one can offer to their family. He recounted his own experiences of closely witnessing his father's four-year battle with cancer, which motivated him to prioritize his own fitness. Singh stressed the importance of regular health check-ups.

Lieutenant General (R) Dr. Bipin Puri, Director of Medical Services (DMS) at Apollo Hospital, highlighted the alarming increase in breast cancer cases among young individuals over the past 25 years, especially those under the age of 50. He underlined the necessity of regular screenings for women above the age of forty.

Kishore Ajwani, Managing Editor of Network 18 and host of "Sau Baat Ki Ek Baat," pledged to allocate more media coverage to raise awareness about diseases like cancer.

Dr. Kumar Rishikesh, a Senior Consultant in the Oncology Department at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, organized this event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to draw more people into the campaign. In his keynote address, Dr. Rishikesh provided a comprehensive overview of the ongoing medical research and the application of cutting-edge technology in cancer treatment worldwide. He also addressed the emotional, social, and economic dimensions of cancer care. Dr. Rishikesh advocated for a national-level campaign on cancer screening and raised essential questions concerning the stance of medical insurance companies. He pointed out that, at times, despite having insurance, companies refuse claims from cancer patients, leading to unnecessary complexities. He called for government agencies to address the ambiguity surrounding medical insurance for cancer patients.

Dr Syed Asim Rizvi stressed that people should not pay heed to rumours about cancer treatment, as India offers some of the best treatments available today. He encouraged patients to seek treatment from qualified Indian doctors, assuring them that victory over cancer is achievable. Dr Sapna Manocha emphasized the importance of providing counselling to cancer patients and their families, as they often go through emotional upheavals. She advised doctors to allocate time for the patient's loved ones as well. Dr. Manu Bhadauria addressed concerns about the cost of cancer treatment, asserting that it remains affordable in India. She mentioned government policies that support this and stressed the need to inform the public about these initiatives.

The program was expertly conducted by Ritu Bhardwaj, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Senior Oncologist Dr. Kumar Rishikesh.
