Chennai: UK's global superstar, Ed Sheeran, continued to spread his musical magic across India with his ongoing Mathematics tour. On Wednesday, he graced the vibrant city of Chennai, taking his electrifying show to a whole new level. Joining him on stage was none other than the legendary Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. The duo combined their musical genius, offering fans a remix of Sheeran's chart-topping hit "Shape of You" alongside Rahman's famous track "Urvasi." However, a technical glitch threatened to halt their performance when Rahman's microphone failed to deliver his voice as expected.
The collaboration between the two musical icons was nothing short of magical, even though a faulty mic caused a brief disruption. As Ed Sheeran introduced Rahman to the audience, shouting, “Will you make some noise for AR Rahman?” the crowd erupted with cheers. Rahman, known for his signature black attire and sunglasses, joined Sheeran on stage, ready to perform. But despite Rahman vocalizing parts of "Urvasi," his mic wasn’t working properly for much of the performance. In response, Sheeran took the lead, showcasing his support and ensuring the crowd remained excited. Fans continued to cheer, clearly undeterred by the technical hiccup.
Sheeran and Rahman’s collaboration received an outpouring of love from fans across social media platforms. One fan wrote, “Goddamn, I will say it again! Aadhar Card for Ed Bhai,” while another gushed, “Witnessed this iconic moment at the concert. This one is for the books.” Some fans were particularly moved by Sheeran’s respect and admiration for Rahman, with one remarking, “That Aura when a global artist says the name AR Rahman.” While most comments praised the performance, a few fans suggested that the duo could have benefitted from a little more practice. “Irundhalum nalla practice pani irukalam (Even then, we could have practiced well),” one fan tweeted.
During his India tour, Ed Sheeran took time to meet AR Rahman and his son A R Ameen before the concert. Ameen, who is also a talented singer, shared behind-the-scenes photos and videos with Sheeran on his Instagram. One of the photos shows Sheeran posing with Rahman and Ameen, while another captures Sheeran taking a picture of Rahman working in the studio. In a heartwarming moment, Sheeran also sang his famous love song "Perfect" with students from Rahman’s KM College of Music & Technology. Sheeran shared the experience on Instagram, captioning the video, “Singing perfect with the amazing choir at @kmmcchennai here in Chennai today, wowsers (flip sideways for the full experience gang).”
Sheeran’s trip to Chennai wasn’t all work and no play. A video shared by a fan club revealed Sheeran receiving a head massage in Chennai, which he humorously called "abuse," much to the delight of his followers.
Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour will conclude in Delhi-NCR on February 15. The tour, organized by AEG Presents Asia and BookMyShow Live, has captivated fans across the country, showcasing Sheeran’s incredible talent and his love for Indian culture.
