Seven Bengaluru prison officials have been suspended following an investigation into the alleged preferential treatment of Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa while in custody. The suspension comes after a viral photograph and video surfaced online, showing the actor in what appears to be a relaxed and privileged state, raising serious concerns about security and fairness within the prison system.

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar confirmed the suspensions, stating, "The police went there and investigated. Based on a preliminary inquiry, they have found seven officers involved in this, and they have been suspended. Now we are investigating the matter further. It's a serious security lapse."

Renukaswamy murder case

The controversy erupted when an image of Darshan, currently in judicial custody at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case, began circulating online. The photo depicts Darshan casually seated, holding a cigarette and coffee cup, accompanied by three other individuals.

Reports suggest that the individuals with him include the criminal Wilson Garden Naga, the actor's manager and co-accused Nagaraj, and another inmate, Kulla Seena. Additionally, a video has emerged allegedly showing Darshan engaging in a video call while in custody.

Widespread outrage

This incident has sparked widespread criticism and outrage, with many questioning the apparent VIP treatment given to Darshan. The actor, along with 16 others, including his friend Pavithra Gowda, is accused in the murder of Renukaswamy.

The case has garnered significant attention due to Darshan's celebrity status and the brutal nature of the crime. The victim, a fan of Darshan, was allegedly lured and murdered after sending inappropriate messages to Ms. Gowda.

Investigation underway

Renukaswamy's father, Kashinath S. Shivanagowdru, has called for a thorough investigation, expressing his disbelief over the leaked images. "Looking at the picture, I'm surprised to see him (Darshan) with others holding a cigarette and drinking tea. We doubt whether he is in jail or not. Jail should be a jail and should not become something else. He should be treated like other normal prisoners, but here it looks like he seems to be sitting in a resort," he said, adding that a CBI probe may be necessary.

The investigation has further revealed that Raghavendra, a member of a Darshan fan club, allegedly lured Renukaswamy to a shed in RR Nagar under the pretense of meeting the actor, where the victim was tortured and killed. The post-mortem report confirmed that Renukaswamy died due to shock and hemorrhage from multiple blunt injuries.
