Seven people were arrested and a case was registered against 19 named and several unidentified individuals on Tuesday following a violent protest by truck drivers and locals on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. The protest, aimed at voicing opposition to the now-suspended hit-and-run laws, turned chaotic as protestors resorted to stone pelting and blocking traffic.
The incident occurred at Safai Bypass in Mainpuri district's Karhal area, creating a massive roadblock that stranded vehicles. Police intervened, using force to disperse the unruly mob and restore traffic flow on the 302-kilometer-long expressway.
A detailed FIR has been filed against the protestors, with charges including rioting, unlawful assembly, and damage to public property.
"Seven individuals - Aman, Rajveer, Ankit, Saurav, Anshul, Shivam, and Ravi - have been apprehended in connection with the incident," confirmed Vinod Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Mainpuri.
The protest stemmed from discontent amongst truck drivers regarding the recently introduced hit-and-run laws, which have since been put on hold. Frustrations boiled over on Tuesday, leading to the violent disruption of traffic on the busy expressway.
