Security Alert: A suspected drone attack on an Indian cargo vessel off the coast sparked security concerns, as the incident unfolded outside the conflict zone, said retired Wing Commander Praful Bakshi, raising alarms for India and global security.
Speaking exclusively to ANI, the former Indian Air Force officer noted the surprise and concern as the suspected drone strike occured within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the subcontinent, dangerously close to the Porbandar coast, with Indian crew members aboard.
A Pentagon spokesperson reported that the motor vessel, CHEM PLUTO, faced a one-way drone attack, raising international tensions as the drone was allegedly fired from Iran, 200 nautical miles from the Indian coast.
Bakshi emphasised the significance of the attack, highlighting its potential spill-over effect from other conflict zones, and questioned the safety of the area, irrespective of the mode of the attack, be it a missile or a drone.
Expressing concern, Bakshi urged the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard to be vigilant and ready, positioning forces for enhanced security, particularly along the western coast, considering the neighbouring geopolitical landscape.
The defence expert stressed the need for the armed forces to be prepared for any eventuality, given the heightened tensions and potential risks in the region.
Detailing the official response, the Indian Coast Guard's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre activated safety measures, ensuring no loss of life, and diverted nearby vessels for assistance.
As the situation unfolded, the Indian Coast Guard vessels and aircraft were deployed for assistance, with the cargo vessel making its way to Mumbai after assessing damages and repairs.
The suspected drone attack raised concerns about the security of Indian waters, prompting calls for heightened preparedness and a swift response from the Indian Coast Guard.
