The Supreme Court has issued notice to CBI on pleas of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail and challenging the Delhi High Court order upholding his arrest by the CBI in a corruption case stemming from the alleged excise policy scam.

The court has also requested a response from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding Kejriwal's bail plea and scheduled the next hearing for August 23.

Responding to the same, Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Arvind Kejriwal described the situation as "strange" before the bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan. He highlighted that Kejriwal had already been granted interim bail in a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case on May 10. Furthermore, he secured interim bail from the Supreme Court in July and was granted bail in a separate CBI case by a lower court. Singhvi referred to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader's detention as an "insurance arrest," questioning its legitimacy.

Singhvi argued that the CBI's arrest of Kejriwal, nearly two years after the case was registered, was legally unsound and motivated by malice. He asserted that the application for interim bail was filed because Kejriwal would easily meet the criteria required for bail.

Previously, on August 5, the Delhi High Court upheld Kejriwal's arrest, stating that the CBI's actions were free of malice and that the agency had demonstrated the potential for the AAP leader to influence witnesses.
