Amid the water crisis in the national capital, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Upper Yamuna Board to hold an emergency meeting on June 5. According to the sources, the Central government, Haryana government, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi government have been asked to take necessary steps to tackle the water crisis in Delhi. The states have been asked to submit a report on June 6.

Delhi's water problem has to be solved: SC

The statement from the Vacation bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and KV Vishwanathan has come during the hearing of a writ petition filed by the Delhi government seeking directions for the state of Haryana to immediately provide water to the crisis-hit national capital.

Notably, Delhi has been witnessing a severe water crisis due to severe heatwave conditions prevailing in north India.

Himachal Pradesh ready to give water

Responding to the situation, the neighboring state Himachal Pradesh has agreed to provide water from its surplus to the crisis-hit Delhi.

Haryana opposed giving water

It is worth noting that cooperation is required from both the neighboring states which share a border with the capital, but the Haryana government has refused to release water to Delhi.

On the other side, while addressing the issue, the Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta said that Board can arrange the water but Delhi has to make sure that Delhi must stop 50% wastage of water supplied to the national capital.
