The Supreme Court on Monday extended the interim bail given to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendra Jain by five weeks on medical grounds. The apex court granted interim bail to Jain after considering that he underwent spine surgery and needed time to recover.

The former Delhi minister was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 29 for a money laundering case, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who represented Jain, told the Court that the former Cabinet Minister had undergone spine surgery on Friday and needed time to recover, and therefore requested an extension of the interim bail.

However, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the ED, said that while the central agency was not against the interim bail plea, they wanted an independent evaluation of Jain by AIIMS or any other hospital – which would reveal that the AAP leader did not require hospitalisation. The Court said that it would consider the ED’s plea for independent evaluation in its next hearing.

The Supreme Court bench of Justices AS Bopanna and Bela M Trivedi, after granting the interim bail, posted the matter for hearing on August 21.

Satyendra Jain undergoes surgery for ‘back problem’ after Tihar slip

The jailed minister was hospitalised after he reportedly slipped and fell in the bathroom of New Delhi’s Tihar jail, as per jail officials. He was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 26 until 11 July on medical grounds, saying that a citizen has a right to receive treatment of his choice in a private hospital at his own expense.

Saurabh Bharadwaj, the Minster of Health of Delhi, said that Jain had successfully undergone the surgery for back problems, and wished him a speedy recovery.

“Met elder brother Satyendra Jain ji in the hospital day before yesterday. He had been having back pain for quite some time. Surgery has been done. May God heal him soon,” Bharadwaj wrote in Hindi on his Twitter account.
